The Lenape people lived in the New York City area when the Dutch settled in the early 17 th century. The Dutch founded New Amsterdam on the southern tip of Manhattan, and the British renamed it "New York" when they assumed control in 1664. New York City served as the capital of the United States for five years from 1785-1790, and has been the largest city in the country since 1790.

Today, New York is one of the largest and most important economic centers in the world. Over 8.4 million people live in the city itself, and more than 23.4 million people live in the greater metropolitan area. New York is known for its extraordinary diversity—as many as 800 different languages are spoken on any given day.
